The Journey Shawl 2017
Illustrations by Salina Jane, Words By Luke Fay
In an age where we are becoming more aware of the impact we have on our planet and environment; an increasing number of people are taking up crafts such as knitting and choose to make and create gifts for others, rather than buying them. When we make something for someone else we go on a journey, one within which we create a story and we build a little of ourselves, our thoughts, emotions, experiences, and love into the finished piece. This series of work is all about the journey we go through when creating as well as being a tribute the places and people I most treasure in London. It was created in collaboration with Luke and whilst I was knitting a lace weight shawl in a shawl swap in an online group for a friend I have yet to meet. I hope the viewer will give thought to how precious each part of this process of creating is, and perhaps allow them to value the handmade even more.
